Elkader Jailhouse Inn

My friends and I rented a room here over the weekend. Instantly walking into the Inn was like stepping back through time. The dining room to the right was large and beautiful. Through there you came to a modern kitchen with a huge island area to use for serving or prep. Upstairs was our suite, a two bedroom that had a shared bathroom across the hall. Every room had its own lock and code, which made us feel secure. We didn’t have access to any other rooms, which was fine, although you can rent the entire inn. The best part was, again, downstairs. The old cell block sat at the back of the hallway, with a bar and a game table on the right, but everything else was set up like a little historic tour and it was great looking at the old cells and reading the history. Highly recommended stay!!

We have stayed twice in the Halstad suite and have enjoyed the facility. Very roomy and all the amenities you would need for a night or a week. Definitely recommend a stay here.

Great place! Beautiful rooms and commons areas. The Warden is friendly and fair. Our stay (sentence) was easy and relaxed. The Kitchen is first class. We will be returning for more jail time!

This was a very nice place to stay. Had everything we needed. Very quiet and peaceful. Nice room and nice kitchen and dinning area You couldn't ask for anything better. The price was reasonable too. They get a thumbs up.

My family of 21 met here and rented the entire Jailhouse for 4 days. We loved the Jailhouse! It's so beautiful, big, FULLY stocked with everything we could possibly need (gourmet kitchen had EVERYTHING we needed to cook), and the grounds were lovely. Not only did the 8 kids (under 12) love exploring the house, they had so much fun romping around on the property and we felt perfectly safe to let them go! And the town of Elkader was such a pleasant surprise. For a small town, it seemed there was stuff to do and everything was so clean and tasteful. We spent a day floating on the Turkey River...so fun. Penn was very responsive and easy to work with! Two of the boys broke a window and Penn wasn't upset...just concerned that they didn't get hurt. :) We hope to go back and we highly recommend the Jailhouse for a very unique, comfortable, and fun place to stay!

The Emma Bear suite worked well for my husband's work trip so he and his employee could have their own rooms. Clean rooms and comfortable beds. Would stay here again.

This was a great location for 5 couples looking for a retreat. Everyone had their own bedroom (only one bedroom didn't have a queen). The kitchen, dining room and bar area were wonderful places to hang out together. My only regret is not taking the time to luxuriate in one of the fancy bathtubs.

They have done a beautiful job restoring and furnishing the Jailhouse Inn. The only thing I would change are the beds. We didn't find them terribly comfortable. But they also weren't the worst thing I've ever slept on. The building and the rooms are beautiful. The kitchen is massive and the dining room has a perfect size table for friends and relatives to join in for dinner. The shower pressure was fantastic. We all felt really comfortable there. There's plenty of parking. They should note in their instructions that if you come in at night, the parking lot is on the left hand side of the building as you're facing it. The only reason it got 4 instead of 5 stars were the beds, and that's being picky. Watch your footing on the front steps as I believe those are the original steps and they have a larger rise to them than contemporary standards.
